24-Mag is seeking experienced software engineers to contribute to specialized consulting work evaluating AI-assisted development workflows and software quality practices.
About the Role
This is a remote, part-time consulting opportunity for experienced Software Engineers with strong code-review, debugging, and AI-assisted development expertise. You'll evaluate end-to-end software development sessions produced with AI-assisted coding tools, assessing code quality, development workflows, and engineering practices. This role is ideal for backend or full-stack engineers who want to deepen their expertise in AI-assisted development while providing valuable feedback on modern development practices.
Responsibilities
- Evaluate complete software development sessions from initial requirements through implementation, assessing functional and technical correctness
- Review backend or full-stack code for logical errors, regressions, edge cases, and debugging gaps while evaluating the soundness of proposed fixes
- Assess AI-assisted development workflows, including how developers interact with coding assistants like Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and Claude Code throughout implementation
- Review multi-step coding trajectories and development traces rather than isolated snippets, evaluating the sequence of investigation, implementation, testing, and refinement
- Apply rubric-based evaluation criteria, providing clear written explanations with specific evidence to support assessment decisions
- Evaluate engineering decisions against established software development practices, identifying unnecessary complexity and technically weak approaches
- Review developer-tool workflows and interactions between automated assistance and human engineering judgment
Requirements
- 3+ years of professional software development experience with strong backend or full-stack engineering background
- Hands-on experience with AI-assisted coding tools such as Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, or similar platforms
- Strong code-reading, debugging, and code-review skills with ability to evaluate correctness and technical quality
- Ability to evaluate multi-step software development trajectories and provide precise technical feedback in writing
- Experience with agentic or specification-driven development workflows
- U.S.-based for this fully remote position
Nice to Have
- Experience with Kiro or Amazon CodeCatalyst
- Previous experience evaluating or grading AI-generated code
- Contributions to developer tooling projects
